Anyone know who this is? It was sent in by Yvonne Gamble who was researching her father's service in WWII. He was John Thomas Potter from Coventry and served in HMS Shiel. This photo was in her late parents collection and she has absolutely no idea who it is. It was most probably an oppo of her late father and thats why the photo was amongst his possessions. Long shot but does anyone recognise this young matelot?

When HMS Carysfort was in Mombasa in late July 1966 the carrier Eagle entered harbour. Shortly after the Captain of Eagle sent his launch over to collect POM(E) Frank Malone DSM. Here's why. The Captain of Eagle J C Y Roxburgh CBE DSO DSC and bar and Frank served together on the submarine United in the Med 1942/43 completing 10 patrols. Shown above is the citation for Frank an acting PO Stoker at the time who was awarded the DSM on Nov 43 and a 23 year old called Lieutenant J C Y Roxburgh who was the CO of the submarine and awarded the DSO. Some say that the Captain of Eagle called on Frank and there was a massive kerfuffle on the Iron Deck but Captain Roxburgh said no fuss this is a private visit. Some also say they can't recall Eagle being in Mombasa. It certainly was because I listened to the World Cup Final on her SRE on 30th July 1966 in 800 Sqdn mess with George Pennell a killick writer who was on the Squadron.

Singapore Lines Barracks Aden. There is some dispute over where we were accommodated ashore whilst the ship was in quarantine in Aden during the salmonella entritidis outbreak. Some say it was Singapore Lines whilst others believe it was Waterloo Lines Barracks, home of 45 Cdo RM. I flew out to Aden as First Phase Party of the new commission and know that I was definitely accommodated in Waterloo Lines Barracks and not Singapore Lines. POMEM(M) John Thompson confirmed in December 2014 he was also in Waterloo Lines Barracks. Perhaps the answer is the ship's company lived in both barracks.

The rescue of the fishing boat fails.
Cyril Clueitt wrote in May 2012: We took the fishing boat in tow but the going was a bit rough. The fishermen were gesturing that they were hungry and had no fags so we floated a heaving line back to them. Whey they got the line in hand we got together bread and butter and anything edible along with packets of fags and a couple of boxes of safety matches. They were put in polythene bags, knotted with bags inside each other. About three in all I think. We secured the goodies to the heaving line and they heaved it in as we paid it out until they had the goodies in hand. I thought the two was going a bit fast and in the choppy seas the boat got swamped. She also had a leak below deck so she got a bit flooded. We got her alongside and proceeded to pump her dry and secured the array of gear on deck and made her seaworthy. Again, the crew were being fed, watered and fagged by Carysfort's crew. When seaworthy we renewed the tow and proceeded back to Gib, arriving there 10 hours lat at 0400 - too late I must add for our run ashore. I don't know what happened to the fishing boat after that.
These four photos show an attempt to rescue a sinking fishing boat.

Photo of HMS Cavalier's ship's office taken by Ian Fraser on a recent visit to the ship. Slightly different layout to Carysfort's ship's office but I've included it for interest.
Look what I've just found during a tidy up of my garden shed! This is not from Carysfort but does have a CA connection and was gifted to me around 35 years ago. You will see from the photo above provided by Ian Fraser of his recent visit to Cavalier that although the ship's office was small and cramped it boasted two scuttles (portholes to the uninitiated). In Carysfort it was my job to polish the brightwork round the scuttles prior to entering harbour so they looked all nice and shiny. However, they were usually encrusted in salt etc so I used to rub them down with wire wool initially as a shortcut prior to finishing off with bluebell. However, the downside of using wire wool is the ship's side used to get streaked from it. This usually resulted in the Jimmy either storming into the ship's office gunning for me or piping me to the Iron Deck where I had to do the walk of shame with him along the ship's side where he would point out the streaks and berate me for my laziness/initiative. Well today No 1 I took perverse delight in cleaning up this clip with wire wool prior to using brasso to shine it! Jim Donaldson HMS Carysfort Webmaster 24th August 2016

Ian McKenzie's Form S.50 (pay chit). Two interesting points to note here. (1) He was only paid £14 a fortnight and (2) in the remarks column you can see he was weighed off for being adrift for 38 minutes and suffered one days loss of leave but more importantly two days pay. He was travelling back to Guzz from leave by train along with two other lads and they asked a civilian in the same carriage to shake them when they arrived in Guzz. However, they woke up to find themselves crossing the Tamar Bridge. It cost them a small fortune to get back because they had to hire a taxi then they were further out of pocket by losing two days pay for 38 minutes adrift. So much for the "good old days".

ex AB TS Arthur Cook of the first commission believes this photo shows Carysfort alongside the upturned wreck of the Tirpitz.
